It's one of life's great mysteries: two socks go into the washing machine, but only one comes out. Why do socks disappear in the washing machine – and where do they actually end up?
First, the good news: your washing machine probably doesn't have a secret appetite for socks. Nevertheless, individual socks really can disappear during a wash. And in most cases, there's a rather ordinary explanation.

Where Do Socks Disappear in the Washing Machine?
Small items of clothing can get caught up in other laundry during a wash. Socks are particularly good at hiding inside trouser legs, duvet covers or fitted sheets, sometimes only reappearing the next time you change your bedding.
Depending on the design of your washing machine, socks can also slip into the area between the drum and the rubber door seal during the spin cycle. In some cases, they even manage to find their way further inside the machine. So if a sock has genuinely vanished without a trace, it's worth taking a closer look around the door seal and drum, especially if you have an older model.
And of course, there's a third possibility: the washing machine was completely innocent. Perhaps the missing sock never made it into the wash in the first place. Under the laundry basket, behind the radiator, between the bed and the wall – socks seem to have a remarkable talent for disappearing without anyone noticing.
How to Stop Socks from Going Missing
If you're tired of your ever-growing collection of odd socks, try washing smaller socks and other little items in a mesh laundry bag. This keeps pairs together and prevents them from getting lost among the rest of your laundry or inside the machine.

It's also a good idea not to overload your washing machine and, particularly with older models, to occasionally check the area around the drum and rubber door seal.
What Can You Do with Odd Socks?
If the missing partner still hasn't turned up after several washes, there's no need to throw the remaining sock away. You can simply mix and match odd socks – after all, good vibes don't always have to come in perfectly matching pairs.
